4 x This Week: Brush Pens, Drawing Tablets, and Sister + Sushi

Girl Profile in Ink
I love brush pens! But I suck at drawing profiles. Boo.

This week’s 4x post has two images in it instead of one– really going all out today.

I’m testing out posting on Tuesdays, though I think I’ll move it back to Mondays next time around. Recapping the week on a Tuesday just feels odd.

**1**

My sister visited over a few days plus the weekend, so that was nice. I missed her so much! Mostly when we get together we just eat food. Favorite restaurant is Japonessa in downtown Seattle for sushi, yummmm.

She lives in Arizona right now for school, and she doesn’t like it much. I didn’t like it much when I was there either. Sorry, Arizona.

**2**

I’m drawing more! Or at least I’m trying to. I really love brush pens, but my hands are shaky, so mastering them is definitely a work in progress.

I also borrowed a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet from my school and OH MY GOD I’M IN LOVE. Currently I own the Intuos, but it’s pretty basic, and you can’t see your screen on the tablet with one of those. The Cintiq I borrowed was the 13HD with a touchscreen. Oh man. My lines are so smooth. Everything is so beautiful. I mean, look at this:

Sketching with a Wacom Cintiq Tablet

I want one so badly! But it’ll be bad if I get too used to it, because I soooo can’t afford one right now.

**3**

Just found out that Microsoft Word can read your documents to you. Isn’t that amazing? I can clearly remember a few years ago when I wanted something like this for reading the stories I wrote back to me, but was disappointed when it didn’t exist/wasn’t accessible.

But now it’s real! It’s happening! And my writing has never sounded weirder.

I also saw Infinity War. It was good.

Very good.

Goodbye 2017, and Hello 2018!

Happy New Year 2018 Doodle!Well, I’ve survived another year, which is absolutely fantastic. And that means that I have another year to reflect on in my usual New Year’s looking forward/back thing. While I don’t think I can truly do the year justice (mostly because I don’t really remember what happened for most of it…), I will mention a few points I’ve been thinking about.

**Looking Back**

Notably good books from this year include: Ninefox Gambit and Raven Stratagem by Yoon Ha Lee, Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke, Hearts & Other Body Parts by Ira Bloom, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, Caraval by Stephanie Garber, Warcross by Marie Lu, An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard, and The Graces by Laure Eve. I’ve also met my goal of reading at least one book a month. So thank you, you wonderful books you.

I also read a lot of manga this year, more than I probably can mention here, but my top three are Yona of the Dawn by Mizuho Kusanagi, Noragami by Adachitoka, and Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya (which I finally finished from when I was a kid.) High recommendations for each of these.

I participated in Inktober, which was fun.

Also, I’ve been meaning to mention this for a while but I love love love the music composed by Phil Lober. Sountrack to my life. In other music news, however, I think this year most resembles Paramore’s After Laughter album, particularly the first half.

I’ve started playing Warframe with my friends. And you guys. It’s so fun.

I did not finish my novel. Again. But I think once it’s done, I’ll be so happy.

**Looking Forward**

I’m going to actually finish my novel this year. Yes, I know I say this every year. But this time it’s true!

I’m also going to try to make more art this year. I could use the practice, haha.

There’s a photo comic I’ve been wanting to make for a while… so maybe I’ll make it this year if I find the time.

By this time next year I’ll have graduated from college and will hopefully have a job. I am both terrified and excited beyond words.

Because of this last fact, I’m actually finding it hard to look into the future… which is unusual. But I shall persevere.

And finally, Little Atmospheres: I can’t guarantee I’ll blog more, mostly because my life isn’t too exciting just yet. I may also try to reinstate the 4 x This Week Posts, but again, no guarantees.

Well, thank you guys for this year! And here’s hoping for a better 2018. It’s been fun, you guys.

Inktober 2017 Day Three: Circus

Day Three: CircusOf course I couldn’t resist throwing a little Night Circus in there.

Anyway, I added a Ferris wheel because I like them, although circuses don’t usually have those. Also I didn’t have a compass. The circle is not circular. Boo.

Also I have realized that my typical “day” usually ends at like 3:00 a.m. the next day. Hence the late posts *sigh*

4 x This Week: He’s Writing Backwards, Isn’t He

Doodle from 6-19-17

Me drawing: looks good
Also me drawing: he’s writing backwards isn’t he

Anyway, 4 things that stuck out to me this past week:

  1. Only reached my writing goal of (at least) 300 words a day three times this week, but they were a very productive three times. Lesson: keep writing, you can cut stuff out later!
  2. There is a human who made me want to invoke this song this week. Thank you, sir-who-shall-remain-nameless-and-that-I-would-punch-if-we-weren’t-related. I don’t have that many weak points, yet this person managed to hit. Every. Single. One. during his tirade. It was not pretty. There were tears and existential crises. Related to #3. Also related: I miss college and my dorm. I do not like being home. SOMEONE TAKE ME BACK.
  3. I think I’ve hit a low point in my life… All of a sudden, too. Like, I don’t remember being in this pit of despair last week. I’m still in college so it’s kind of okay, but I have no job and am doing nothing for the summer, which makes me feel like human garbage. On the flip side, though, I would like to thank one of my friends for sending me a godlike miracle text of support. She didn’t even know I was feeling down, and yet she made me feel 1000x better. I would also like to thank my sister, who I usually take care of, but I feel is now taking care of me. (Also, it was her birthday yesterday *confetti*)
  4. On a better note, I tore through the manga Akatsuki no Yona in like three days. Character development. Gotta love it. But, unfinished story… driving me insane.

Well, those are my 4 for this week. Stay turned, hopefully next Monday my life will be drastically better.

Hopefully.

30 (ish)-Day Drawing Challenge: Day Twenty-Two

Day Twenty-Two of the 30 (ish)-Day Drawing Challenge: An Untranslatable Word.

Day Twenty-Two: Ataraxia

Back to doing one of my favorite things: hand lettering! And with one of my favorite words, too.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I love the sound of the word as you say it, and it has a nice symmetrical look about it, don’t you think? The word ataraxia is from the Greek language, and is a state of calm, tranquility, or imperturbability. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, ataraxia (ἀταραξία) translates directly to “impassiveness”; the word has been adopted into the English language to form the noun ataraxy, which is defined as “Freedom from disturbance of mind or passion; stoical indifference,” though it is rarely used.

I found one definition I had saved because I rather liked it, though I don’t know where it came from: “the lack of agitation that comes from understanding the ways of the universe, accepting fate, knowing what one can control and, therefore focusing only on the things one can actually change.” It also has different philosophical interpretations, depending on which Greek school of thought you’re listening to– which I think gives the word its “untranslatability.” Definitions I’ve found range from seeing and accepting things as they are, being in a state where you cannot be agitated, or drawing calm from the pursuit of virtues. I’m probably only scratching the surface here. (If anyone knows about classical Greek philosophy or knows more about this word, I’d love to hear from you!)

For Day Twenty-Three:

  • pencil/charcoal
  • colored pencil
  • digital
  • digital with color
  • my pick

and

94. something on this list + a mustache

The something: 58. harbor

This ought to be fun. Five days left– I’d better stop slacking!
